Apple were rumoured to have been waiting until the release of iOS6 before unleashing a podcasts app on us. That’s all changed as Apple have just released their podcasts app and you can download it now from iTunes.

New Features in Apple’s Podcast App

It features a much imporved way to access and organise you favourite podcasts along with a really cool retro reel-to-reel tape player that appears if you tap the podcast’s logo when listening to any podcast. This screen also brings the feature to socially share podcasts on Twitter (and soon in iOS6 Facebook), email and via message. There is a sleep mode function, jump back 10 seconds and jump forward 30 seconds too.

If you liked the x2 speed option when consuming podcasts, don’t worry, it hasn’t disappeared. Now you can flick between a tortoise or hare icon to match your listening speed preference.

What Does The Podcast App Mean For Audio Content Creators?

It’s great news if you already produce your own podcast as podcasting is about to be catapulted into the hands of every iPhone user. The user experience of choosing their own audio is the future of radio broadcasting in my opinion. If you don’t syndicate your audio/broadcast/DJ mix by podcast then now is the time to start.

What do you think? Do you think the release of this app will help podcasters? Leave a comment. Get the Podcasts app now here.

  1. What do most people do here for podcasts? When I looked into this a couple of years ago creating a podcast was just way too much effort. Hopefully things have changed.

    • Hi Matthew. There's a podcast out there covering almost every subject. Ask yourself what you're passionate about. What could you talk about for hours on end without stopping? Is there something that friends and family already ask you about – are you their go to person for something?

If you already have a radio show or other content like a blog have you considered turning that into a podcast?

Good luck and let me know how you go!
